In that situation, the property will stay in the trust until the beneficiaries reach a certain age. Trusts are also helpful to hold property when beneficiaries are minor children who are not yet fit to handle their full inheritance. You can place money, physical assets, or anything else of value in a trust. This is typically so the beneficiaries (individuals or institutions who stand to inherit something) can use the property at some point in the future. TrustsĪ trust is a legal contract that allows another person (the “trustee”) to hold property for you (the “grantor”). Online will services offer interactive questionnaires to help you create a legally binding will specific to your state. If you already know where you want your assets to go, it’s easy to make a will without a lawyer. Going through probate court without a will is more time consuming and expensive, with the money coming out of your estate first. Your estate will go through the probate process whether you die with or without a will, but having a will ensures your executor honors your wishes. Probate refers to the process of distributing your estate after you’ve died. WillsĪ will, formally called a “ last will and testament,” is a legal document stating how you want your executor (the person legally obligated to administer your estate) to distribute your assets when you die.ĭying without a will is known as dying “intestate,” which means state law will dictate what happens with your estate. Some people even include a letter of instruction with their estate to walk their family members through the documents. Most of this process consists of creating and finalizing estate planning documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and living wills. At the very least, everyone should have a simple estate plan in place. The biggest benefit of estate planning is peace of mind-you’ll know your wishes will be fulfilled for the benefit of your loved ones. This type of planning helps determine who can make decisions on your behalf, who takes care of your dependents, and how to avoid unnecessary taxes and waiting periods.Įstate planning covers any decisions regarding money, property, medical care, dependent care, and other matters that can arise when a person dies. Organizing your affairs in preparation for the end of your life is an important task, and estate planning is an ongoing process that includes much more than writing a will. The first mechanically propelled, two-wheeled vehicle may have been built by Kirkpatrick MacMillan, a Scottish blacksmith, in 1839, although the claim is often disputed. Its rider sat astride a wooden frame supported by two in-line wheels and pushed the vehicle along with his or her feet while steering the front wheel. Von Drais introduced it to the public in Mannheim in 1817 and in Paris in 1818. It is regarded as the first bicycle and von Drais is seen as the "father of the bicycle", but it did not have pedals. The " dandy horse", also called Draisienne or Laufmaschine ("running machine"), was the first human means of transport to use only two wheels in tandem and was invented by the German Baron Karl von Drais. In India, for example, a cycle refers only to a two-wheeler using pedal power whereas the term bike is used to describe a two-wheeler using internal combustion engine or electric motors as a source of motive power instead of motorcycle/motorbike. Īlthough bike and cycle are used interchangeably to refer mostly to two types of two-wheelers, the terms still vary across the world. In Unicode, the code point for "bicycle" is 0x1F6B2. Other words for bicycle include "bike", "pushbike", "pedal cycle", or "cycle". The design of the bicycle was an advance on the velocipede, although the words were used with some degree of overlap for a time. The word was first used in 1847 in a French publication to describe an unidentified two-wheeled vehicle, possibly a carriage. The word bicycle first appeared in English print in The Daily News in 1868, to describe "Bysicles and trysicles" on the "Champs Elysées and Bois de Boulogne". Several components that played a key role in the development of the automobile were initially invented for use in the bicycle, including ball bearings, pneumatic tires, chain-driven sprockets and tension-spoked wheels. The bicycle's invention has had an enormous effect on society, both in terms of culture and of advancing modern industrial methods. In the 21st century electric bicycles have become popular. These have allowed for a proliferation of specialized designs for many types of cycling. However, many details have been improved, especially since the advent of modern materials and computer-aided design. The basic shape and configuration of a typical upright or "safety bicycle", has changed little since the first chain-driven model was developed around 1885. They also provide a popular form of recreation, and have been adapted for use as children's toys, general fitness, military and police applications, courier services, bicycle racing, and bicycle stunts. They are the principal means of transportation in many regions. These numbers far exceed the number of cars, both in total and ranked by the number of individual models produced. By the early 21st century there were more than 1 billion. A bicycle rider is called a cyclist, or bicyclist.īicycles were introduced in the 19th century in Europe.
In this paper, we proposed a new group sequential test procedure fully accounting for both seasonality and variation from the historical controls. Furthermore, not rejecting the null could be due to a lack of power and cannot always be interpreted as proof of safety. Such an approach doesn't account for either the variation in determining the reference risk from a control population or the seasonality effect. If the null hypothesis is never rejected, the vaccine is considered safe. When the number of AEs is "too high", a safety signal is identified. Specifically, it compares the post-vaccination incidence of adverse event (AE) in a vaccinated population with a pre-specified reference level by sequentially conducting hypothesis testing during the surveillance. The group sequential analysis is a common method employed in safety surveillance. Post-market active safety monitoring is important for the timely capture of safety signals associated with exposure to a new vaccine or drug. What medical discovery are you hoping will be achieved in your lifetime?Įventually, I hope there will be a new discoveries that leads to potential therapies by altering both the immune system and the adult stem cell populations to promote complete organ regeneration. These will potentially reveal the mechanisms that determine incomplete tissue repair (scarring) and complete regeneration. In particular, I would like to investigate whether T regulatory cells, a special cell type that is well known for controlling the immune response, can affect the fate of liver stem cells and how this is achieved. I hope I can establish my research group here in Birmingham with the focus on studying the role of adaptive immune response in promoting liver regeneration. What are you hoping to accomplish while in Birmingham? Furthermore, the attractive Birmingham Fellowship Scheme provides me the opportunity to join the University with abundant support to setup my independent research career. The strong link between the Centre for Liver and Gastrointestinal Research and the Institute of Immunology and Immunotherapy is the perfect environment to pursue my research interest which covers both immunology and liver regeneration. The University of Birmingham has a longstanding excellence in liver research. What attracted you to the University of Birmingham? During my time in Edinburgh, I have identified an adult liver progenitor cell population and shown the potential of using adult progenitor cells for future therapies. My previous research focused on studying the role of liver stem cell and regeneration. I was based at the Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Edinburgh.
